Francis Nona is a proud man from the Torres Strait who is a lecturer and early-career researcher at the Queensland University of Technology, Carumba Institute. His work is informed by a strong cultural upbringing, balanced with a career as a Registered Nurse and Director of an Indigenous community-controlled health service in the Darling Downs. Mr Nona has worked in clinical settings as a Registered Nurse including juvenile detention centres, aged care, rehabilitation units, brain injury rehabilitation, and Aboriginal Medical Services. He brings to academia a strong understanding of cultural engagement and protocol from his Country, an understanding of the health system as it applies to First Nations and other Australians. Mr Nona is a lead contributor to research focused on climate change and Aboriginal and Torres Islander health and wellbeing. He has great commitment to improving the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and through his experience and networks across academia and policy, is skilled in tailoring findings that facilitates translation of research into practice, such as: leading the writing of a Lowitja Discussion Paper on Rights Based Approaches to Climate and Health (to be launched early 2024).
